I found out this past week that one of my magazine spread designs made it into the Print Regional Design Annual to be published this fall. It was a surprise and a dream come true. Print is one of the two premier awards to receive in the United States, the other being Communication Arts. I was pretty happy to be chosen out of 20,000 entries.
I do owe all of my success to BYU, for not letting me into the Graphic Design program. They pushed me out which in turn pushed me to find my own methods and concepting. I have tried to push myself in the thinking that is Four dimensional and conceptual. I guess I figured it out. I am not bitter towards BYU's Graphic Design program—I indeed learned a ton while I was there, I just didn't blossom until I was away from them. Of course, I heard stories of a few of the students they chose above me were plaigerizers and had no talent, but oh well, it ended up all right for me. I love my job and love my BA in design.
